A visit to the red dunes of Sossusvlei

A visit to the red dunes of Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei, the red desert of Namibia, is famous. Here beautifully shaped sand dunes can be seen with a peculiar red colour. The most iconic place is however Deadvlei. A white clay plain surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world, some amount even to 400 meters! The plain is filled with gnarled acacia trees. Those often make for nice pictures.

With an all-terrain vehicle we are taken to the place. Then it’s still quite a distance toiling through the sand. You quickly tire out when you have to get up a high dune through loose sand! When at a certain point the summit is reached, running down goes luckily a lot faster. However the pictures are worth it: a very nice view!

We also stop at the actual Sossusvlei. A bit less beautiful than Deadvlei in my opinion.

On the way back we’re actually already way too late, but we can’t resist the temptation to also stop at Dune 45. It’s even heavier toiling up here, but the view is worth it!

It’s way too late when we arrive at the gate (Sossusvlei is fenced!). The gate is already completely abandoned, but after a short while somebody shows up with a key. When they see our flat tires, we’re allowed to drive through without paying a fine. Those tires ran flat actually on the way to Sossusvlei (the fourth and fifth of the trip!), but they don’t need to know that! We again enjoyed one of the most beautiful landscapes of Africa!

Want to see more landscapes of Africa? Have a look at Spitzkoppe and the Okavango!

For the birds of Africa see the posts about birds of the savannah, birds of the African garden, the swamp and hornbills.

You can also read about mammals. Hippo’s in the Okavango, Elephants and the Ungulates of Africa.

We even saw some cats! Read about Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs.
